For Couples Enhancing Meaningful Connection Going Deeper Reuben Lowe

By feeling the floor underneath your thighs and the air moving in and out of your lungs as you breathe slow and deep, you will begin to feel more grounded and at peace. Mediation will start to feel like your happy place. So, just imagine sharing that blissful headspace with your partner.

I invited her to a Buddhist-based recovery meeting, and she came sometimes with me. I think I was pretty gentle and not pushy, but mindfulness grabbed her pretty Meetheage reviews and testimonials quickly and she became interested. The Headspace app has hundreds of guided exercises to help you build your practice. Start by searching these three meditations to help you have healthy relationships.

Let this experience pour over you.Stay holding this moment and rest in the sweetness of this moment.Where is that exact point where that snapshot of sweetness is captured by your mind? Couples meditation involves partners sitting together and using mindfulness exercises, breathing techniques, or guided meditations designed to cultivate connection and harmony. Unlike traditional meditation, where the focus is often inward, couples meditation emphasizes a shared presence. That means learning to be fully present not only within oneself but also with one’s partner. This practice nurtures emotional tuning, so to speak, helping couples become more sensitive to each other’s needs and emotions.

Some may be a better fit than others for you and your relationship, and that’s absolutely okay. In my personal relationship, we have investigated many ways to bring mindfulness to our relationship. Sometimes it may be hard to connect with the feelings of metta toward yourself or your partner. Like the previous exercise, this is a meditation activity for couples that we actually do quite regularly as we find it helps us connect with our love for one another. You may already be familiar with metta, or loving-kindness meditation. Although not a strict mindfulness practice, it is related.

Secondly—and more importantly—doing it together can enhance communication, foster mutual empathy, and create shared experiences that strengthen the relationship. Life can get so busy that it’s easy to miss out on quality time with our partners. Couples meditation can help ease this burden because it’s about taking a moment to truly connect with each other without distractions or to-do lists. With the right couples meditation practice, you can focus on the present to help strengthen your relationship or reduce stress in your daily lives. This is a guided mindfulness meditation practice for couples.

When you’ve done the practice a few times and understand it clearly, you might consider practicing in silence without guidance. This practice is a combination of silent and out-loud metta. Metta, or loving-kindness, is the practice of extending goodwill toward ourselves and others. With loving-kindness, we care for the wellbeing and happiness of our partners.

This is a practice we’ve found useful in working with couples over the years, and incorporate into our own relationship as well. When the going gets tough, remind yourself and your partner why you’re doing this. Then, show up even when it feels tough—that’s when the meditation practice will make the most impact.

My mind always goes to food when I meditate—more specifically, cheeseburgers. My brain also travels to my to-do list, whatever show I’m bingeing on Netflix, or current stressors. Which is exactly why I need meditation, but also why I can never seem to stick with it. You can meditate on your relationship with your spouse by talking intently about where your marriage is going and opening up about your thoughts and feelings. Couples’ meditation is a great way to bond and grow as partners.

It’s no secret that life can get super, duper hectic. That’s why scheduling couples meditation into your routine is vital. By committing to this mindful ritual, you’re choosing to prioritize your relationship. And when you do, it’s only fitting that you’d reap the following science-backed benefits. Couples meditation isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal.

Maybe we’re jealous of how much time our partner spends with their coworkers. If we’re reactive, we might lash out and say something critical like, “You don’t care about me.” We might tell them they can’t spend time with their coworkers anymore. Meditation can also help with tensions that can arise whenever there’s a meeting of two minds. We want to eat tacos, but our partner wants pasta.

The goal is to set the tone for the practice and signal your sacred time to reconnect. Whatever your and your partner’s reasons, setting a shared intention gives you both a common ground to stay motivated. You can even journal these intentions down as a reminder to check in with yourselves when needed. This soothing meditation with Nalaya is an invitation to explore the heart chakra, the energy center for love and compassion. Even without physical touch, you can dive into the realms of arousal and fantasy, exploring the magic of your mind and uncovering new layers of intimacy.

This mindful pause helps avoid defensiveness, therefore encouraging more thoughtful dialogue. Whatever we go through, we continue with our shared mindfulness activities as a couple. We both have our own individual mindfulness practices, but we make it a point to share some together. As mentioned in the actual exercises, we do the Beginning Anew and Loving-Kindness practices nearly every week. They’ve helped us through many difficult times and through all of the good or pleasant times. We were introduced to dyads, practices like the Beginning Anew where you are mindfully speaking and listening to one another.

If you or your partner is uncomfortable, remembering to keep it light can be helpful. Don’t fish for depth that isn’t accessible for you in this moment. No matter how deep or light-hearted the session is, you still are communicating with one another and cultivating connection. I recommend reading the aforementioned post, and watching the video below. This is truly one of my favorite meditation practices for couples, and can be adapted for a variety of different topics.

  • You’re managing your own experience AND being aware of another person.
  • This can help you communicate better in your relationship so you can hear with empathy instead of jumping to conclusions.
  • There’s no standard approach to couples meditation.
  • To practice, you’ll both focus on developing feelings of compassion and love, first for each other and then expanding outwards to family, friends, and even strangers.

By adding it to your routine, you will be reminded of the bigger picture, feel more level-headed, and form a more spiritual connection with your partner. However, mindful couples view these moments as opportunities for growth and understanding. By meditating together, you increase your capacity for compassion, which enriches your relationship.

More In Personal Development

Every time we meditate, we train ourselves to be more aware of our thoughts and feelings. With this new awareness, we can zoom out a bit and give ourselves a healthy sense of perspective rather than fall back into negative thought patterns. When we realize the thought we’re having isn’t helpful, we can notice it, then let it go. After a month of daily meditation, that advice completely rings true. For us, it felt great to engage in something nondigital together each day that was good for our minds and souls.

If your marriage is in a physically or emotionally unhealthy place, seeing a counselor can help. As mentioned, couples’ meditation can help you feel calmer and happier. When you are calm, collected, and connected, you make it easier for your spouse to approach you.

But the truth is, to meditate simply means to think deeply about a subject at length. Like with any therapy, both partners must be willing to put their all into meditation for relationships to be successful. When you do meditation for relationships, you take time to focus on yourself, who you are, and who you want to be. When you feel happy and accomplished, it rubs off on your home life.

Just recognize that your partner is having an experience and they’re sharing it. It’s okay if everything is really surface-level or silly. If you want to further understand the noting mindfulness practice, here’s a meditation you can try by yourself or with your partner silently. Unlike my daily exercise routine of running or yoga, it’s hard to remember to meditate, and we completely forgot a few times. Klein says consistency is important when it comes to seeing the benefits of meditation and that skipping days will reduce the efficacy. When everything feels overwhelming, meditating with your partner can be like choosing to tackle stress together. The team effort can make you both feel more supported. Sacred Relationships are the basis of what we think of when true love is expressed. The connection of two souls, united in purpose, is the Alchemical merging of hearts, minds and incarnations. The fiery furnace of passion is the smelter for those who come together to unite as one Sacred Couple, individuals united by the Divine imperative. These emotions also make their way into sexual acts, giving partners a more spiritual understanding of lovemaking.
